Why I Stopped Recommending Dow Corning Products for Everything (and You Should Too)

A hands-on engineer shares why assuming one Dow Corning product fits all scenarios leads to costly mistakes, and how honest limitations build lasting trust with clients.

I used to think Dow Corning could do no wrong

When I first started specifying materials for industrial clients back in 2017, I had a simple rule: if it's not Dow Corning, it's not going on my list. The brand had decades of silicone expertise, a reputation for consistency, and a product for virtually every application. Sealing? Dow Corning. Lubrication? Dow Corning. Coatings? Dow Corning. Personal care ingredients? You guessed it.

But here's the thing I learned the hard way – that approach cost my company about $3,200 in rework and lost credibility in Q3 of last year alone. The mistake wasn't the products themselves. It was my assumption that one line of silicone-based solutions could handle every edge case.

Where my blind faith led me wrong

1. The vacuum lubricant disaster

A client needed a lubricant for a high-vacuum chamber in a pharmaceutical packaging line. I reached for our standard Dow Corning vacuum lubricant – high-temperature, low-outgassing, perfect for the vacuum side. But I didn't check the oxygen compatibility. The chamber had a pure oxygen purge cycle. That particular lubricant (which was a silicone oil with anti-wear additives) ignited during maintenance. (Note to self: always check the gas compatibility matrix before recommending.) The result: $1,200 in damaged seals, a 3-day production delay, and a very unhappy plant manager.

2. Coatings: more than just the product

Another case: I recommended a premium elastomeric coating from the Dow Corning line for an exterior metal structure. The coating itself was excellent – it had the flexibility, UV resistance, and adhesion properties we needed. But I ignored the surface preparation and environmental conditions. The coating failed within six months because the steel wasn't properly cleaned and the application temperature was too low.

Now, that wasn't the coating's fault. The coating value added services team at Dow actually offers pre-application technical audits – but I was too proud (and rushed) to use them. The $2,000 coating job turned into a $5,000 redo. I learned that specifying the right material is only half the equation; the other half is the process around it.

3. The personal care side: corn starch vs. silicone

When a cosmetics formulator asked me about using a Dow Corning silicone elastomer in a baby powder alternative, I immediately said yes – silicone is safe, smooth, and water-repellent. But then I received a follow-up: "Is corn starch bad for your skin?" I had to pause. Corn starch is a classic natural absorbent. The question wasn't about product superiority; it was about who is using it.

For some skin types – especially those prone to fungal infections or with compromised barriers – corn starch can be problematic (it feeds yeast). But for most users, it's perfectly fine. The honest answer I gave: "Dow Corning silicones are great for oil control and a silky feel, but if your target audience has sensitivities to silicones or prefers pure natural ingredients, corn starch might actually be better in that specific context."

That didn't sell any more silicone – but it built trust. The formulator now calls me for honest advice on both sides.

The objection I hear – and why I stick with honesty

Someone will say: "But we're paid to recommend our own products, not to point out limitations." I'd argue the opposite. When you tell a client, "This Dow Corning product is excellent for 80% of cases, and here's how to know if you're in the other 20%," you're not weakening your recommendation. You're strengthening it. That level of honesty prevents the kind of failures I've described – and those failures cost far more than a lost sale.

I still specify Dow Corning products whenever they're the right fit. But I no longer assume they're the right fit for everything. I check the environment, the substrate, the user, and the process. I use the coating value added services when I need to. And I'm not afraid to say, "For this specific application, a different solution might work better – but here's what you'd be trading off."

That's the difference between a product pusher and a trusted advisor. Trust me, I've been both.
